program 2
art of the street
Street art is going mainstream, yet there is no simple definition of what it is. It is an fluid beast encompassing art which is found in or inspired by the urban environment. With rebellious undertones, it is a democratic form of popular public art probably best understood by seeing it. It is not limited to the gallery nor easily collected or possessed by those who may turn art into a trophy.
Considered by some a nuisance, for others street art is a tool for communicating views of dissent, asking difficult questions and expressing concerns.
Its definition and uses are changing: originally a tool to mark territorial boundaries of urban youth today it is even seen in some cases as a means of urban beautification and regeneration.
Whether it is regarded as vandalism or public art, street art has caught the interest of the art world and its lovers of beauty.
This program focuses on:
1. Viewing, commenting and understanding some of the street art we see in our own environment.
2. Creating our own – it may be chalk on the footpath or paint on found objects – the objective is just to have fun and communicate our problems or points of view.
program 3
the art of fiber
Fiber art is about creating and using textiles beyond its functional use.
Fiber artists face the same dilemma of all artists; determining "what is art?" Even if a particular bag or blanket is pleasing aesthetically, does that make it art? Typically, pieces that just follow patterns without doing anything more, are not considered works of fiber art. They should be works of art that communicate some sort of message, emotion or meaning and go beyond just the literal meaning of the materials.
This program focuses on:
1. Viewing, commenting and understanding various forms of fiber work: the materials used, techniques available and the difference between following a pattern and creative freeform.
2. Creating our own – it may be freeform knitting, crochet or weaving using objects that are not suppose to be used to make fabric – it may be experimentation with natural dies, stains and pigments – it may involve stitches and bindings. The objective is to break outside of copying patterns, seeing fabric as fabric and creating to make sense.
program 4
art from printing
Printmaking is such a broad term that supports various processes of multiplication from lino printing, to etching, collogaphs, stenciling to screen printing. Broadly, the production of images normally appear on paper, fabric, parchment and plastic, however there are so many uses and forms of printmaking we are only limited by our imaginations.
This program focuses on:
1. Viewing, commenting and understanding various forms of print work: the materials used, techniques available and the outcomes of each.
2. Creating our own – it may be a lino print onto paper, a collograph using found objects or a repetitive screen print to form a piece of fabric. The objective is to experiment with design and multiplication.
